RONNY AND COLONIALISM

The way to control of other people’s land and goods is colonialism, colonialism is not only the expansion of modern European trend, but it was flourished by the Roman Empire from Armenia to the Atlantic in the second century. Genghis Khan conquered the Middle East including China. In the fifteenth century, southern India came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, and known as a minor Islamic civilization.

During and after colonialism, India has been the state of different nations having different religions, Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam, Christianity and several other religions but there are two main religions in India: Islam and Hinduism and these two nations have been hostile to each other in every field of life. They have different beliefs and interests. Approaching the month of Mohurram, the Muslims cut the branches off of a certain tree of peepul. The tree of peepul is considered as a sacred tree in Hinduism. It was considered a religious riot at which they fought with each other during colonialism.

India has been the state of different nations having different religions, Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam, Christianity and several other religions. But there are two main religions in India: Islam and Hinduism. These two nations have been hostile to each other in every field of life. They have different beliefs and interests. Approaching the month of Mohurram, the Muslims cut the branches off of a certain tree of peepul. The tree of peepul is considered as a sacred tree in Hinduism. It was considered a religious riot at which they fought with each other in colonialism.

Forster sketches this scene in this way,

But Ronny had not disliked his day, for it proved that the British colonialism was necessary to India, there would certainly have been bloodshed without them. His voice grew complacent again; he was here not to be pleasant but to keep the peace (1924: 110).

The very first line of this extract is based on double negative structure. When such type of structure is used, the speaker’s main aim is to emphasize the point. These lines were uttered by Ronny to Miss Quested after the occurrence of accident. Ronny was so much interested in having the authorities like a ‘pukka sahib’. According to Ronny, the India was controlled by the Britain to keep peace not to please its inhabitants. Ronny was fully in the favor of the British Raj. It is an ironical statement; actually they came in India for the expansion of their trade. Apparently they were admirers of the Indians, but inwardly they were the followers of the racial and class differences.

In chapter 9, Forster further depicts India as a British colony,

Is it fair an Englishman should occupy one when Indians are available?… England holds India for her good (1924: 124).

Miss Quested was much interested to meet the Indians, it was her intimately wish. Mr. Turton held a Bridge Party to meet the keen desire of Miss Quested. At this party, all the Indians were invited. But Dr. Aziz did not take part in that very party. He spent the day at his home in the reminiscent of his wife’s anniversary. He also fell ill; his friends visited him to seek his dispositions. There was a talk run among the companions.

Dr. Aziz asked Mr. Fielding about the British raj (colonialism) why you have found a single patch like India to rule harshly. Fielding told him that he was not personally intended to rule in India. But Fielding needed a job for his survival. There is also racial problem in these lines. Dr. Aziz asks Fielding why the Englishman consider their right to rule over the Indians. Indians were considered very inferior class and race in social, economical and political perspective. Fielding responded to Dr. Aziz that England controlled and ruled India for her own betterment because India had been famous for its treasures in all over the world.

RONNY’S COLONIALISM DISCOURSE

Actually discourse is used as a synonym of conversation, or a serious discussion or examination of a learned topic. Colonial discourse is basically the discussion or conversation which held in the political colonies. Loomba quotes Frantz Fanon’s view of colonial discourse, it is an expansion of the literary and communicative efforts in colonial perspective (1998:46). But Focault declares that colonial discourse presents the power and social structure in the daily talks (Loomba 1998:50). The Britain used several discourses in their daily lives to keep up their ruling status.

There is a talk between Ronny and Mrs. Moore in the fifth chapter,

We are not out here for the purpose of behaving pleasantly! What do you mean?” What I say, we’re the peace. Them’s my sentiments. India is not a drawing-room. Your sentiments are those of a god,’ she said quietly… ‘India likes gods’. ‘And Englishman like posing as gods’ (Forster 1924: 69).

Mrs. Moore and Miss Quested were not satisfied with the Englishmen as they were severely treating the Indians. They condemned Ronny on his harshly behavior towards the Indians. He said that the Britain was trained to adopt the severe attitude. If the ruling class takes the leniency towards the subjects, the subjects will exploit the rules and regulations. According to the English, they are superior to the other nations.

The usage of first person pronoun in plural form ‘We’, shows the subjectivity and the sublimity of the English race. Ronny says that India is a place where the people like the gods and those gods can merely be made and introduced by the Englishmen. If the founders and producers of gods are the Englishmen, the Indians will have to follow their motives and interests. Ronny considers his nation very religious and virtuous.

‘India is not a drawing room’ presents the image of mistreatment and exploitation in the Indian public. The drawing-room is the place to present the peace and calm. According to Ronny himself, it was Britishers’s worthiness to expose their own rest on the behalf of the Indian’s peace. ‘India likes gods’; here India is used as a synecdoche to represent the society. On the other hand the word ‘Englishmen’ is used instead of England. It is a binary structure. According to Foucault, power spreads from top to toe. Power has its own hierarchy for its distribution (Loomba 1998:50).

Role of Teachers in Education

Role of Teacher in Education

Education encompasses both the teaching and learning of knowledge, proper conduct, and technical competency. It thus focuses on the cultivation of skills, trades or professions, as well as mental, moral and aesthetic development. Education is a two way process there is some giving person and taking person. So, a teacher plays a pivotal role in a system of education and its roles in education are facilitator, interpreter, translator, a guide etc. Education systems are established to provide education and training, in most of the cases for children and young. A curriculum defines what students should know and have to know, understand and be able to do as the result of education. Teaching also refers to learning facilitated by a real live teacher. Training refers to learning toward preparing learners with specific knowledge, skills, or abilities that can be applied immediately in practical life. Instruction refers to the intentional facilitating of learning toward identified goals, delivered either by an instructor or other forms. So, a teacher’s role is multifunctional. Teachers are knowledge facilitators but only for some, and for whom they were the creator of opportunity and potential. Schools provide the role of engineering for the society. According to U.S. Department of Labour Bureau of Labour Statistics (2001) teachers play an important role in fostering the intellectual and social development of children during their formative years. Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using classroom presentations or individual instruction to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, English etc.

How Role of Teacher is Important?

According to Rahman, et al; (2005) teachers play an important role in delivering new knowledge and skills to students. They are regarded as excellent and competent teachers by parents’ on the bases of excellent academic achievement of the students. Schools play a variety of important social, custodial and organisational roles in communities and with schools come teachers who have primary obligation to help students to learn how to recognize and solve problems, comprehend new phenomenon, construct mental models of those phenomena , and, given a new situation, set goals and regulate their own learning.

Learning and teaching always remain ‘the main game’ of education. To this end, teachers’ educational expertise needs to be strengthened, together with their professional knowledge, skills and dispositions. Teachers can then bring their wisdom to bear on the challenge new technologies pose for literacy education as well as for teaching more generally (Lankshear, 2000).

Teachers have a primary role in determining what is needed or what would work best with their students. Findings from research (Eslami & Fatahi, 2004) on teachers’ perceptions and beliefs indicate that these perceptions and beliefs not only have considerable influence on their instructional practices and classroom behaviour but also are related to their students’ achievement. Thus, knowing, the perceptions and beliefs of teachers enable one to make predictions about teaching and assessment practices in classrooms. Teachers clearly play a key role in the process of learning and education. Teachers, students, the educational atmosphere, the syllabi, and educational aids are the main components of the whole process without which it can neither start nor accomplish anything. The student is dependent on the teacher for the acquisition of knowledge. The existence or absence of an ideal educational atmosphere, a good syllabus, and effective aids does affect the objectives and quality of education, but only to an extent. These are neither absolutely necessary, nor does their absence halt the process. But the availability of an able and motivational teacher could end the students’ dependence on all other factors. It would take well-educated, caring and compassionate teachers-teachers trained in their subjects as per the needs of the students with respect to their gender, age, psyche and level of comprehension (Khalid &Khan 2006).

 Role of Teacher as Facilitator

The learners adopt a relativistic view in which one can see that knowledge is relative to the frame of reference that is applied to it by the learner, and that this needs to be taken into account when working with knowledge. Correspondingly now, the learner sees the role of a teacher as one of partner and facilitator in the development of knowledge. Knowledge is seen as certain or absolute and formal learning is a matter of absorption of the knowledge of the experts (e.g. teachers). It is described as ‘transitional knowledge’, a second stage in which learner begins to have doubts about the certainly of knowledge and gains a position where one acknowledges that there is both partial certainly and partial uncertainly. The third stage is ‘independent knowledge’ when learners recognize the uncertainly of the knowledge, and cope with this by taking the position that everyone has a right to her own opinion or beliefs. This seems to be the most sophisticated domain, that of ‘contextual knowledge’. In this knowledge is seen as constructed, and is understood in relation to effective deployment of evidence that best fits a given context. Teachers are, at this stage, seen as facilitators and partners in the process of the development of knowledge. The link between epistemological beliefs and learning is, of course, crucial (Moon, 2008).But with the passage of time and changes in ages also change the role and responsibility of a teacher.

Through the method of latina and the performs of Ovid, greek belief affected ancient and rebirth romantics such as Petrarch, Boccaccio and Dante in Tuscany.
In north European countries, greek belief never took the same keep of the visible artistry ,but its impact was very plain on literature. Both Latin and greek traditional text messages were converted, so that experiences of belief became available . in The united kingdom, Chaucer, the Elizabethans and Bob Milton were among those affected by greek myths ;nearly all the significant British romantics from Shakespeare to Bob Links converted for motivation to greek belief. Jean Racine in Portugal and Goethe in Malaysia improved Historical greek dilemma. Racine modified the standard myths such as those of Phaedra, Andromache, Oedipus and Iphigenia to new goal.

By the end of the millennium, romanticism started an increase of passion for all things Historical greek , such as greek belief. In England, it was an excellent interval for new translations of Historical greek disasters and Homer, and these in convert motivated modern romantics, such as Keats , Byron and Shelley. The Hellenism of queen’s Victoria poet laureate, Alfred master Tennyson, was such that even his images of the quintessentially British judge of master writer are suffused with addresses of the Homeric epics. The Truth Of Dreams

The Truth Of Dreams:

Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die

Life is a broken-winged bird, that can not fly.”

                                                                                                              (Langstone Hughes)

Dreams are the most crucial part of life. Everybody has dreams without knowing the reason behind their occurrence. This is an involuntary phenomenon. Usually, we have dreams when we get sleep, but sometimes we have dreams with our widely opened eyes.
Dreams can be freaky, prophetic, adventurous, sensational and nightmares. Some dreams provide relief and solution to our problems; on the other hand, some dreams can be extremely tormented. Tormented dreams aggravate tension and cause insomnia. What we suppress during the day becomes our dream. Dreams are, in fact, the language of our suppressed aspirations and fears. Dreams reflect our ambitions and make us more determined and contemplated. Dreaming is totally a mental process and is proved to be a true interpreter of ourselves. Great dreams bring great achievements and remarkable success in our lives and make us exemplary and everlasting. These help us in achieving out of reach things. Orison Swett Marden has said:

“All men who have achieved great things, have been great dreamers”

Dreams Increase Wisdom:

Dreams increase wisdom and arise curiosity. Man is normally in the habit of committing mistakes and this all is quite natural. But when we do something wrong the voice of our conscience turned into our dreams, which does not let us to sleep. In this way,we look back and analyze our mistakes or deeds and then our curiousity leads us towards something new and constructive. We become the wisest people, when we are having great dreams and are adamant to meet them. Dreams infuse unique thinkings in us. We have to confront a lot of problems and dreams provide us sensible solution to these problems. Eleanor Roosevelt has rightly said:

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams”

Dreams enhance our reasoning level because while dreaming our mind is constantly working. In this process,we are seeing those things that we want to do or to get and in dreams we try to seek  those methodologies and techniques by which we can acquire them. This mental working increase our wisdom and make us more genius.

Dreams Are An Escape from Reality:

Reality is always bitter and painful and this is human nature to shun reality or to avoid it at all costs. In this case our dreams work as defense mechanism, they allow the mind to go to anywhere it desires. In dreams we see whatever we want to see. Dreaming is always a pleasant sensation, but it can also be rough in some cases. Dreams are not physical and exist only in our minds and these are a good source to shun reality in order to live happily. Things become as we think about them, this all depends upon our observation and perception. According to L.M Montgomery:

“You may tire of reality but you never tire of dreams”

Death is a great reality of life and we all feel frightened when we think about it. We see death with great terror and it affects us badly. Therefore, we often see in dreams earthquakes, famine diseases, lightening or thundering and enormous storms that have engulfed countless lives. Our financial and social issues also haunt us in our dreams. But sometimes dreams embellish our life with great beauty and satisfaction. We feel ourselves in a fairy land and, we see beautiful lakes, oceans, waterfalls and greenery. We see that we are living in a castle and are having many slaves. Sometimes even we become king and get remarkable happiness. We forget all sorrows and cares of our real life and our imaginary world seem to us our most beautiful possession. In this imaginary world we get rid prison of this cruel world for a while and become rulers of our own realm. In sensational dreams everything looks rather different and more appealing. We feel ourselves flying in the air and doing outstanding things.

In dreams we can say each and everything that in real life we can never say. Dreams are actually the expression of our thoughts and feelings. Sometimes we love a person fiercely and we can never express it, but this expression of love is quite easy in dreams. In dreamy world we tell our dear ones that how much we love them and what we think about them. It has widely been observed that this expression of love is pretty difficult in real life. Therefore,it will not be wrong to say that dreams reduce the torture of reality and bring happiness to us.

“Dreams are illustrations….from the book, your soul is writing about you”

Dreams Provide Relief To Stress:

Life is full of hustle and bustle, furry and demands. External circumstances cause stress and this stress is usually known an overwhelming response to events and happenings. It upsets the balance of a person and makes life chaotic. Today we have to do many activities at the same time. We have to think about our financial problems,we get worried about our next promotion. We have to bear the brunt of our boss. Sometimes we can not achieve our well-deserved career goals. Dreams are the best substitute of this stress. Dreams decrease the pain of our expectations and thinkings or build positivity in us. Diseases afflict many people and become a major cause of life stress for them. Family disputes, attitudes of relatives, studies and poor health conditions are also irritative. We get tensed and depressed, this depression ultimately turned into dream. We suppose many beautiful things by ourselves. Dreams are actually a fight between our conscious and subconscious. They increase our self-knowledge and provide us information or insight.

All our worries fade away in our dreamy world. In this world we can shed tears without any fear, we can smile or express ourselves freely and we can get whatever we want. In fact, in dreams we have everything of our choice around us, and we mostly feel ourselves very satisfied and happy. Dreams do not let stress to get on our nerves or get us down. High and positive dreams can be the best solution of releasing tension.

To sum up the whole discussion, I would like to say that we all our slaves of our dreams because these are the true portrayal of our thinking and wishes. These become the voice of our suppressed desires and compelled us to go head. Dreams bind the whole humanity together, because everyone has dreams without any distinction. We do not have any control over this phenomenon. Our dreams are our driving force that pushes us to express ourselves. I have a firm belief that in this cruel world dreams provide a great soothing relief and urge a man to think about bright future. Nightmares are also proved constructive because they increase our curiousity and give us a remarkable courage for exploring and investigating the truths of life. And they provide knowledge about an invisible world and make it visible beautifully to us. Prophetic dreams deal with spiritual sphere of our life and enhance it incredibly. Adventurous dreams bring calm and excitement in our life. On the whole we can say that dreams are our best friends because they deal with each and every secret of our life

“Dreams are like stars…..you may never touch them

But if you follow them they will lead you to your destiny”
